My 3 year old boy loves reading books and I wanted to buy him a book that he would enjoy and that would teach him the letters and sounds he will need when he starts school. We read the story together and he enjoys tracing the shape of the letter and learning the actions that go with each letter. I like the way the book is split up into smaller sections that can be revisited. The characters Inky, Snake and Bee are great and I have now ordered the wall chart to go with the book. Good book, but minus one star for "lightening" We bought this for our four year old and she's enjoying it a lot. Just make sure you correct the spelling of "lightening"... Great teaching aid This book id fatastic for helping children engage with phonics the short stories help to focus them on the specific sound. It works I nearly didn't buy this book because of the misspelling of words which is used to emphasise the sounds. I still do not see the need to do this as there are enough words to choose from without the need to misspell any. Children use their visual as well as their audio memory when learning to read. Luckily these words are very tiny and almost impossible to read anyway, so we just ignore them.
The stories themselves are rather dull and the illustrations mediocre.
HOWEVER, despite these negative comments I still rate this book highly because the actions are excellent and my son could sometimes work out the sounds just by looking at the action pictures. The large raised letters are also very good. This book has definitely been a very positive contribution to my son's reading development.
Jolly Stories (Jolly Phonics) A Great book to teach your child the sound and the way the letter should be written with a raised letter to race over with your finger. Also have the Jolly Songs (Jolly Phonics) that also is a great way to teach your child the sound of letters.
