After the initial chapters where we follow Dex and Em in their early twenties I found myself resenting the fact that the story would go into their late twenties, thirties and even early fourties, because I felt scared of what I feel must become of my life now and what will actually have taken place when I look back at my life in twenty years time. A great deal of fear was what I felt.
But the main message I was left with was that it's okay not to be the new Messiah or change every single act of misery or pain, but to just have the ability to change the little things around you. And that has made such a difference to my life. So, thank you, David Nicholls. Thank you ever so much. ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! Both emotional and entertaining at the same time. Nicholls really brings the characters to life and has you wanting to weep one second and laugh the next. A fabulously nostalgic novel which I thoroughly recommend to all! Undemanding but affecting I bought this after reading an interview with David Nicholls and was glad I did. It was an easy read and I finished it quickly but I found it funny, moving and very affecting. This may be due to the fact that I myself am a similar age to the couple in the book and met my husband at university so the influences are personal. My daughters did not have the same interest in it. I had definite images in my head for all the characters and can very much see this as a film in the very near future. I would recommend 'One Day'and have bought it for friends. It is hilarious and tragic in turns and although a cliche; I laughed out loud and cried real tears...and I'm an old cynic. Loved it! At first I wasn't completely sure on the concept of just a day of each year for each chapter, but after a few chapters and I couldn't put it down. I absolutely loved it and have recommended it to everyone. Its a really easy and brilliant read. If it's good enough for Deidre...... I have never read this book....however I noticed Deidre Barlow reading it and explaining the plot to someone in a recent episode of Coronation Street!
