Read it, read it ,read it I'm not normally a fan of these type of books detailing worthy causes etc, so not sure how this ended up in my shopping list. Ran out of other books at home so embarked on this and was instantly captivated. For a biography I think it reads really well, the story flows but not is not rigidly timebound and you get a great sense for all the people involved. Although Greg has obviously done some stirling work I think his wife (dealing with two young children at home and an absentee husband) should get more acknowledgement!
This books makes you realise that it is possible for one person to make a difference; whilst I'm not sure I have the energy to climb K2 or build a school I have set up a monthly donation to CAI. One small step and all that. A must for children and adults alike. Asked to read this as the first book in a new book club, I initially had very little knowledge of Mortenson and his achievements. When I'd finished the last page I felt bereft and wanted to read more. A bit like a novel with a feel good-factor ending 'Three cups of tea' is an inspiring and compelling book which kept me willing Mortenson to succeed. And amazingly, even facing Fatwa's and drug-lord shoot-outs, he does!!
This should be a must for secondary education with so many areas of scope to show children how anyone can make a difference and more reasonantly - how it's important to look beyond the problems of our own country. It also provides an interesting insight into part of the world we only relate to military fighting. Brilliantly written - Relin successfully combines actual quotes with graphic description.
I'm looking forward to my first book club review meeting - no-one else will get a word in!!! Inspirational - highly recommended on this basis. Deserves 5 stars for content - I gave it 4 because I found the journalistic style a bit clunky at times.
But what a story! Inspirational, soul-stirring - and great to read something that makes you feel proud to be human for a change. I have bought the next book to read as well, partly as a way of supporting Mortenson's work. Amazing read This has been one of the best books that I have read for a long time, I enjoyed it so much it has pushed me to write my first Amazon review. I think everybody should read this book, it is really inspiring and has made me think about my life and what I can do to help others. I have ordered the next book, Stones into Schools and can't wait to read it! Five stars to Greg, two for the book Having read the book I really admire what Greg Mortenson has done and they way he's risked his life to help others. However the book itself was very hard going I found, not well structured with random accounts of meetings and not a clear link between the events described. One chapter didn't really seem to lead to another, it almost felt I'd started a new book each time I got to a new chapter which was really tiring. This may be because the person who was writing it didn't actually experience what was being written about, I am not sure. I did persist to the end as it was a book group choice, and know much more now about the politics of the area etc as a result, but so many times I could have put it down and not picked it up again. However as I say I am amazed by what Greg and his team have done, a real lesson to us all to be more tolerant and not view a whole nation in a certain way because of what we are fed on the TV etc.
