Summaries and Customer Reviews are supplied by Amazon.com Essential guide for fabulous camping This guide is very helpful because it contains loads of useful information. For example, it tells one exactly how many showers etc (if any) the campsites actually contain. It is also very accurate. The author, who was recently on television, is very keen on camping and his enthusiasm for his hobby is inspiring.
I have now visited two of his recommended campsites, and they were exactly as he described them, except that at the almost hidden entrance to one campsite the owners have added a new board.
I hope he finds more campsites for us.
Beware. Do other research before booking! We bought this book as we hate large commercial campsites. It's certainly an engaging read, and we selected an ideal-sounding site, with no noise/smells/intrusive lights. The field was nice, the owner charming, and the site quiet, - apart from the trains. Dear God, the TRAINS!! They went past all day and night, ranging from passenger ones, which were loud enough, to heavy oil trains, - it was like being buzzed by low-flying Chinooks! Sleep was very difficult, even with ear-plugs. I certainly don't expect camping-out to be totally quiet, but there are limits. I seriously doubt that the author stayed overnight at this site, unless he was deaf, drugged or spectacularly drunk. If we choose another site from this "personal selection" (really?), I will be checking the Ordnance Survey maps and other reviews before booking. Cool guide If you're into quiet, quirky and no frills camping, this is a lovely little book. Have seen a couple of the sites and hope to be visiting one this weekend. Ideal for the 'quick trip away' informative and chucklesome Those that know Dixe Wills travel writing from the Guardian will know that he writes with flair and subtle humour while ensuring you get the facts. This book is no exception and is a must for every discerning camper who hates large, faceless, municipal sites. Some sense, at last, for campers This, latest, book by Dixe Wills is wonderful. My family and I love camping but hate big, commercial, crammed-in campsites - this book has enboldened us to go and find sites that are small, quiet, peaceful and friendly. The book is written according to Dixe's own rules regarding humour and form so provides a consistency with his other books and also makes you laugh out loud (well, me anyway; my wife doesn't get the humour.)Thank you, Dixe! BTW, if anyone can add to his database of campsites under an acre, please do.
